He wrote the poem The Faerie Queene (The Fairy Queen) which is one of the longest poems in English. It tells a fable about the adventures of some knights. The point of the story is to teach readers how to be good people and learn to do what is right.

His friend Sir Walter Raleigh gave him money to help him live while he was working on the poem. Queen Elizabeth I gave Spenser a royal pension, or payment of money, because she liked the poem so much.

He wrote other books and poems, but The Faerie Queene is what he is famous for.
